January can be and mostly is here in the Netherlands grey, rainy, windy and cool. So when the weather broke on Friday to being clear and cold I started out the door to add another few kilometers to my Floris V pad hike.
I started at the Schiphol Airport via the train to Schinnen located in the heart of Limburg.
I have been reading the book Between The Waters, by Larry Luukkonen this fall. It details the northwest trails and the portages from Lake Superior at the mouth of the St Louis River to Big Sandy Lake and the entrance into the Mississippi River. The first major portage for loaded canoes was the Grand Portage.
Today we hiked the bird area close to the camping. This area has an observation deck where you can look at the birds that land to feed. There is a trail through the woods that skirts the birding area this 3km loop was a wonderful hike.
