That is possible it is also possible they had to go through several inches of straw mulch to get nutrients. The soil was so bad that I did a trench compost method. Where I placed old fruits and veggies from last year in a trench and covered with mulch then covered with potting soil, then seeded. I was surprised when anything even spouted but was even more surprised today to see some were ready to harvest. Only three weeks from seeding.
The long roots of the radishes are impressive. Perhaps they are long due to your dry spell in the Netherlands.
