Many of my blog readers dealt with the bitter cold weather in the Midwest of the USA last week.
I was happy to enjoy a bit of Spring inside and outside our home here in The Netherlands without the constant worry of freezing pipes or frost bite on my fingers and toes. I really don’t miss that sort of cold!
Don’t laugh when I tell you that we have had bitter cold and a snow spell here too. Although, nothing like what the Midwest just experienced, the North Sea can produce a “wet cold” wind that brings squalls of snow and cold. It also can make anyone want to move to a sunnier location for the months of Dec/Jan/Feb.
Last year we escaped to a sunny location –The Sunny Island Paradise – Fuerteventura. That week the island had more rain in one week than it gets all year. This year we decided to spend it at home.
As I write I am looking out the window at the sky spitting a snow rain mix. The flakes are getting bigger as I continue to write. Warm enough to melt as it hits the green grassy ground. Blah!
Finally, I was sick of all this dull weather last week. I made my way out of the house on Thursday and purchased some Spring flowers. Tulips have been available at the local flower shops for two weeks now. It is always the first signals to the start of the flower season. When this country really shines with blooming wonders.

My tulips on Thursday
These fresh tulips when placed in cool water and away from the heater can last two weeks. As they start to fade I just toss the ragged ones clip the ends a bit and place in fresh cool water.
How much would a bunch of tulips this size cost me in the States? About $60.00 (€52.00).
Here? €10.00 ($11.50)

Monday the same tulips
The weekend brought more flowers into the house as the Hubby purchased some for my successful accomplishment of advancing another year. These are the beautiful yellows of Spring.

Yellow flowers of Spring
The small splashes of color are starting to show outside in the gardens. Snowdrops, Daffodils, and Violets/Pansies are the first ones to explode with blooms even when the weather can be cold enough to snow. I took a walk this morning (in my winter jacket, gloves and hat) to capture these images before the afternoon snowfall.

Daffodils in the center of our town waiting for the afternoon snow.

Violets in my garden

Spring is on it’s way!
The coming weeks will bring the sun, the days will start getting a bit longer and warmer, the snow will finally stop and will melt.
Even the Midwest of the USA will have Spring.
Enjoy these gifts from us at The Cedar Journal in Holland (The Netherlands).

Very nicely done old friend :). Interesting read, and yes it was a mere -21F the morning I flew out of Chicago to Dalls for a project. Continue to be happy where you are, and enjoy that beautiful scenery. Now we have Dutch weather, wet and rainy lol.
Love the pictures of the flowers , the little things that helps to brighten our day :).
Keep on writing… tis your gift.

The polar vortex has finally caught up with us too, even though we live only 600 km from the moderating influence of the Pacific. It was minus 6 this morning. So we take comfort in the fact that it is minus 40 in other places farther north. The flowers you presented are a source of joy. It is truly amazing that tulips can already be bought in Dutch flower shops. I love all your flower photos, but the tulips I like the most. Have a wonderful week! Peter

Thanks for your kind comments- Peter. This country of greenhouses and mild climate (reasonably so) has growers always working toward the “next” flower market. We can purchase all sorts of bulbs in pots now that will bloom in coming weeks, or the cut tulips and other cut spring flowering bulbs. It sure helps to drive away the long winter with some color in the house. Hopefully the Polar vortex won’t last too long for you.

Thank you kindly for this visual gift of spring as temps once again drop in Minnesota. We had a lovely weekend warmth, though, with temps in the 30s. It felt really warm after being 60 degrees colder last week. I know spring will come. It just seems far off right now.

I think flowers are a wonderful way to deal with the cold, dark winters! They are colorful, beautiful, and most of all, remind us that Spring really will come.

It appears a happy birthday is in order! Love seeing the colorful flowers – gives us hope we’ll be seeing green in the yards and blooms on the trees – we’ve learned how incredible tasty flowers can be for the local deer population so we have to limit planting a lot of flowers – cute to look at until they start chomping down on your landscaping. Thanks for the uplift from the winter blues.

Beautiful! The birds have started singing spring songs here, and the snowdrops and crocuses are cheering up the garden. No daffodils yet though.
